Speak Now ~ Taylor Swift

Deluxe two CD edition including eight bonus tracks. 2010 release, the third album from the Country/Pop superstar. Speak Now is the follow-up to her multi-million-selling 2008 album, Fearless. The 21-year-old singer/songwriter wrote the entire album on her own and co-produced with longtime collaborator Nathan Chapman, who worked with her on Fearless and her 2006 self-titled debut. Features the single 'Mine'.

Hi, I'm Taylor. I've been alive for 20 years now, and I finally have my own kitchen. I'm very excited about this, and generally excited by anything else that falls into the "cute" or "cozy" categories. I learned to play guitar when I was twelve fro m this guy named Ronnie who came over to fix my parents' computer. I like quilts. But that's probably because I'm always freezing cold. I LOVE Nashville. That's where I live, when I'm lucky enough to be there. I love the town so much, I sometimes feel like I should just roll the windows down in my car (nicknamed the Toyoat. Because it's a Toyota) and scream "I LOVE THIS TOWN" loudly out the windows. That wouldn't be weird, right? Every time I try and wink at someone, I mess it up and end up scaring people. My lucky number always has been and always will be 13. It pops up in front of me in the most obvious and undeniable ways, but only when something good is about to happen. I'm a Sagittarius. I think that means I'm always looking for something new. It also means I have a Christmas-themed birthday party every year. I love bright colors and things that make reality seem more whimsical than it is. I have a collection of ribbons and headbands, and I love them all the same. I over-think and over-plan and over-organize. I've been like this since I was a baby, before I was gigantically tall and over-talkative.

These days, I've been trying to classify my thoughts into two categories: "Things I can change," and "Things I can't." It seems to help me sort through what to really stress about. But there I go again, over-planning and over-organizing my over-thinking! I write songs about my adventures and misadventures, most of which concern love. Love is a tricky business. But if it wasn't, I wouldn't be so enthralled with it. Lately I've come to a wonderful realization that makes me even more fascinated by it: I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to love. No one does! There's no pattern to it, except that it happens to all of us, of course. I can't plan for it. I can't predict how it'll end up. Because love is unpredictable and it's frustrating and it's tragic and it's beautiful. And even though there's no way to feel like I'm an expert at it, it's worth writing songs about -- more than anything else I've ever experienced in my life.

I've apparently been the victim of growing up, which apparently happens to all of us at one point or another. It's been going on for quite some time now, without me knowing it. I've found that growing up can mean a lot of things. For me, it doesn't mean I should become somebody completely new and stop loving the things I used to love. It means I've just added more things to my list. Like for example, I'm still beyond obsessed with the winter season and I still start putting up strings of lights in September. I still love sparkles and grocery shopping and really old cats that are only nice to you half the time. I still love writing in my journal and wearing dresses all the time and staring at chandeliers. But some new things I've fallen in love with -- mismatched everything. Mismatched chairs, mismatched colors, mismatched personalities. I love spraying perfumes I used to wear when I was in high school. It brings me back to the days of trying to get a close parking spot at school, trying to get noticed by soccer players, and trying to figure out how to avoid doing or saying anything uncool, and wishing every minute of every day that one day maybe I'd get a chance to win a Grammy. Or something crazy and out of reach like that. ;) I love old buildings with the paint chipping off the walls and my dad's stories about college. I love the freedom of living alone, but I also love things that make me feel seven again. Back then naivety was the norm and skepticism was a foreign language, and I just think every once in a while you need fries and a chocolate milkshake and your mom. I love picking up a cookbook and closing my eyes and opening it to a random page, then attempting to make that recipe. I've loved my fans from the very first day, but they've said things and done things recently that make me feel like they're my friends -- more now than ever before. I'll never go a day without thinking about our memories together.

For the last two years, I've been writing and recording an album called Speak Now. I only have the option of writing about things that happen in my life, so thankfully a LOT has happened in my life in the last two years. I know I don't always say the right thing at the right time or speak up when I should, but I write it all down. I get my guitar and a pen and all of a sudden, I have a chance to say exactly what I meant to say in real life. Some of the things I wrote about are things everyone saw me go through. Some of the things I wrote about are things nobody ever knew about. I'm beyond excited for you to hear these stories and confessions.

I think it's important that you know that I will never change. But I'll never stay the same either. Must be a Sagittarius thing.

I'm pretty stoked that you read this whole thing. I commend you for that. This was ridiculously long, and you probably have other stuff you could've done in the last four minutes. So to you, or anyone else who has spent four minutes on me in some way-- listening to just one song, or watching one of my videos….Thank you. I love you like I love sparkles and having the last word. And that's real love.

--Taylor

The Gift ~ Susan Boyle

The evolving pop narrative throws up its own unique touchstones. In the last 18 months pop’s own story has turned at some riveting right-angles. It has been a particularly special time.
There is only one defining star of this time-frame for whom it is absolutely impossible to piece the clues together that led to such momentous success. Step forward, Susan Boyle. Susan is a shy, devout Christian with an incredible voice from a tiny Scottish estate. Yes, Susan was a brand new figure ready for her cultural close-up. Even at the age of almost 50.
‘I’m a lot busier than I used to be,’ says Ms Boyle, understating wildly, I’ve met a lot of new people and been fortunate enough to meet some of my idols. When my childhood idol Donny Osmond talked to me as his equal, well, that was a very humbling experience.’ She mentions her broadcast duet with West End and Broadway totem Elaine Paige as another highlight. ‘Just incredible. Singing with her on my TV special was so exciting because I’d always sung along to her records at home. To suddenly find yourself on stage with someone like that was really something. My day-to-day life is so full now.’
The statistics surrounding Susan Boyle are an edifying testament to how one very ordinary woman scaled the realms of the extraordinary, without the usual trappings of pop excess. After becoming an internet sensation on the back of three minutes’ worth of airtime on primetime TV, her performance on Britain’s Got Talent has culminated in over 500million Youtube hits for Susan. If the two watchwords of the 21st century have been ‘reality’ and ‘celebrity’, Susan Boyle had accidentally located a brand new point on the graph where they intersected. One of Britain’s forgotten characters had rarely, if ever, been so memorable.
Her debut album I Dreamed A Dream cut a hotline into the international palette with the speed of a Tokyo freight train. It switched from being the most pre-ordered album in Amazon’s global history to become the fastest selling global debut of all time in weeks. For a woman that almost defines the word ‘parochial’, something about Boyle’s voice and character touched a rare international nerve. Number 1 credits clocked up in 21 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Argentina, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, South Africa, Greece, Belgium, Germany and Mexico. She remains unadorned by the stats. ‘Money means nothing to me,’ she says, ‘My manager is always asking me if I want to know my chart positions and how much I’ve sold but I’m not interested in that. Everybody knows that money doesn’t make you happy.’ For the record, Susan Boyle’s album is now touching towards 10 million worldwide sales.
For her own sake, Ms Boyle has had to make herself ambivalent to the incredible number-crunching her talent has resulted in. ‘When I get on the bus to go to Livingstone, sometimes I have to go back home again,’ she says, ‘I get recognised in the streets these days which seems quite strange to me. Most people are very nice. I get an awful lot of compliments on my album and I never quite know what to say to people.’
If the fiscal benefits of this incredible tale of modern fame hold little allure, the difference it has made to Susan Boyle’s life does. ‘I’m so much more fulfilled now. My life is a richer experience. I still take everything one day at a time. Every day was the same before and now every day brings something new and exciting.’
It is, of course, this humility that touches so many of her ardent followers and fans. When Susan Boyle first appeared it seemed like, for one brief moment, vanity itself collapsed. As that ancient old maxim – ‘Never judge a book by its cover’ – clanked around the globe with speedy viral intensity, it was as if the world was about to offer its first unspoken apology for prizing beauty above all else. Perhaps it would temporarily forget its grotesquely accentuated new heights of judgement. Or perhaps Susan Boyle was just a fleeting icon by which a microscope was shone on our more fickle presumptions. Whatever history gifts the Susan Boyle story in the long term, it is time once again to prove that there is more to this incredible woman than being the symbol for a moment of international reflection. She will do it in the exact same way she entered our consciousness in the first place. With the raw combination of strength and fragility, beauty and solitude that is her singing voice.
Her second album has a seasonal flavour. The Gift was crafted as the perfect Christmas album. It saw her return to Steve Mac’s Rockstone studios, the seat of her crafting I Dreamed A Dream. ‘Steve is fan-bloody-fantastic’ she says, of her new musical anchor. ‘I wasn’t as apprehensive or frightened as I was first time because I knew what I could do and Steve always brings out the best in everyone he works with.’ She thinks about this for a moment. ‘I was still a wee bit nervous, so it was good that I was going back to a place I felt comfortable in.’
Recording a Christmas album was another dream to be ticked off the list for Susan. ‘I feel like it’s become too commercialised over the years. This is a way of expressing my faith, which is the backbone of my existence. Christmas should be about people coming together. Before all my brothers and sisters moved out I remember Christmas always being a very busy time in Blackburn. It revolved around midnight mass. We’d all put on our best clothes to go to Our Lady of Lourdes church and then the presents would follow afterwards. There wasn’t a lot of money around. My mum and dad were so hardworking but there were a lot of us!So Christmas was never about the material things.’ Ironically, the Boyle family grew up on Yule Terrace.
The Gift opens with her heart-stopping rendition of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day. ‘I remembered the original song and how touching it was. There’ve been some absolutely fantastic versions since so I wanted to do that beautiful melody justice. For a singer this song is a gift. And of course there have been so many perfect days since I first entered Britain’s Got Talent it felt like a really appropriate song to sing.’
Other highlights for Susan herself on the album are her delightful renditions of the traditional hymn Away In A Manger (‘It’s the first Christmas carol that I ever learnt to sing’) and the less obvious choice, a cover of Crowded House’s Don’t Dream It’s Over. ‘It was the lyric that really touched me in this one. I’ve been living my dream and I don’t want it to be over. I’ve had the best year of my life and I just want it to continue.’
Because Susan Boyle has experienced such a huge turnaround in her own life, she felt compelled to extend the hand of good fortune with her new album. ‘I feel like I’ve been given the most amazing gift in the last year and I really wanted to pass that on to someone else.’ She began a worldwide ‘Susan-Search’ on Youtube, in which unknown singers were encouraged to send in videos of themselves singing. It is Youtube’s most popular competition ever and at its peak saw a new entry uploaded every six minutes. A little of that Susan magic goes a long way.
The winner, Amber Sassi, was chosen from the thousands of entries. A 33 year old single mother of three and paramedic from Brewerton, Upstate New York, was Susan’s personal choice. ‘Amber’s been struggling to bring up her family,’ says Susan, ‘I wanted so much to give her the opportunity for people to see what she can do. Me and my team watched every video and Amber’s voice struck a chord in me. She’s got a lovely voice and I love its warmth. It’s a beautiful voice and she’s a lovely person.’
In some ways, Ms Boyle’s story is just the same as any woman with a voice in any choir up and down the UK. In her home town of Blackburn, she was schooled in singing in churches and choral societies. A shy young woman with some learning difficulties, being hidden in the blanket of a collective singing arrangement offered her comfort. So in one other, crucial way, her story is entirely her own. The most unlikely chorister in the sea of voices stepped out of line and put her head above the parapet to be noticed. For Susan Boyle, though she would never deign to say so much herself, this was an act of personal heroism, the like of which she had never contemplated before.
For this is still Susan Boyle’s tale. The fearlessness to dream about something other than the lot life has handed you. The chance to escape. The pivotal role of music as a conduit to go to another place, sometimes lodged at the outer recesses of your imagination, and to allow that new place to blossom. Yes, this is Susan Boyle’s tale. It is why it continues to connect with so many unsuspecting people across the world.
‘I used to say that I was on the outside of life looking in,’ she says. ‘And now I feel like I am on the inside, actually living it.’

Alice in Wonderland [Soundtrack] Danny Elfman

Danny Elfman was originally the frontman of art punk band Oingo Bongo, who had a hit with the title song to the movie Weird Science. Later he became better known as the guy who wrote the theme to The Simpsons, as well as composing soundtracks for many other popular TV shows and films.

From Walt Disney Pictures and the vividly creative mind of award-winning director Tim Burton comes the original soundtrack to the highly anticipated feature film. The score from Alice in Wonderland created by Burton's long time collaborator, nominated for 4 Academy Awards® and 10 GRAMMY® Awards, Danny Elfman, will musically lend a magical, whimsical and imaginative twist on one of the most beloved stories of all time. CD package includes 3-panel triptych showcasing the vivid world of Wonderland and key character images

I and Love and You/The Avett Brothers

The Avett Brothers' music has roots in traditional folk and bluegrass, but also captures the high spirits and no-boundaries attitude of rock & roll -- which is appropriate, since rock is where Scott Avett and Seth Avett first cut their teeth as musicians.

"The album's opening lines invite you on a journey that touches on the kind of youthful awakening that has been at the heart of best bands, from The Band to U2"

There is no harmony like brotherly harmony. Something indelible in the weave of voices and play of sensibilities is stamped into the fraternal DNA and also stems from a lifetime of shared experiences. You can hear it in classic brother acts across the musical spectrum, from the Louvin Brothers to the Everly Brothers and on down the decades through the Wilson brothers (Beach Boys), the Davies brothers (Kinks), the Allman Brothers and even the Brothers Gibb (a.k.a., the Bee Gees). You can clearly hear fraternal magic at work in the songs of Scott and Seth Avett, better known as the Avett Brothers, as well.

That magic is abundantly evident on I and Love and You, the Avett Brothers' big-label debut, produced by Rick Rubin. Its 13 songs are delivered in a style that defies pigeonholing but might be described as a rootsy amalgam of folk, country, bluegrass, rock and pop - even a jab of punk-style dynamics here and there.

With I and Love and You, The Avett Brothers have taken a giant step forward.

Gordon Lightfoot - Complete Greatest Hits [Original recording remastered]

Though he rose from the ranks of journeyman '60s folksinger to become a potent and consistent '70s hit maker, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot's stock in trade was as much hard-eyed, dispassionate observation as romance or poetic whimsy. Perhaps that's why his songs have been covered by everyone from Elvis (this set's "Early Morning Rain") to Dylan. If there's such a thing as an alpha-male folkie, Lightfoot certainly fits the bill. Spanning the tongue-in-cheek chauvinism of 1965's "For Lovin' Me" and the cheatin' ways of "Sundown" to more introspective fare like "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Beautiful," this 20-track collection presents a concise primer on Lightfoot's career and craft. After his career peaked with one of the most unlikely top five hits ever, the gloom-laden 1976 narrative "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," Lightfoot's production tailed off sharply, though this anthology's "Stay Loose" ('86) and "Restless" ('93) are testament to his enduring skills as a songwriter and performer. --Jerry McCulley

20 classic hits released by United Artists, Reprise and Warner Bros. From 1965 to 1987. features the hits 'Sundown', 'If You Could read My Mind', 'The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald', 'Carefree Highway' and many more!

Plastic Beach/Gorillaz

The Gorillaz are a project by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett (creator of Tank Girl), involving four animated characters -- 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel -- who make up the hip-hop band.

Five years on from the release of Demon Days, Murdoc Niccals and co. return with Plastic Beach. The band have taken up residence, recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a Plastic Beach HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity. This Plastic Beach is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet.

The world s biggest animated band, Gorillaz formed in 1998, and have since sold 12 million copies over two albums Gorillaz (2000) and Demon Days (2005). They have hit number 1 in more than a dozen countries and picked up awards including Grammys, Novellos, VMAs and EMAs.

Plastic Beach is produced by Gorillaz.

David Garrett

David Garrett is already the stuff of legend in him is enshrined an entire corpus of virtuoso violin art, expounded with a fearsome beauty beyond comprehension. --BBC Music Magazine

Garrett's unique, and wholly individual style, pays as much homage to Metallica as to Mozart. His forthcoming record covers an incredibly diverse selection of repertoire, representing his love for many genres, and the ability to tackle each successfully. Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal," is cleverly reinterpreted, as is Queen's ballad, "Who Wants to Live Forever." AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" is given a memorable new twist, alongside, "He's a Pirate," from "Pirates of the Caribbean." Given his enduring commitment to his first musical love, David still includes some classical selections on his American debut, including the last movement of Vivaldi's "Summer" from The Four Seasons, and Bach's "Air". Not to be satisfied with only imaginative covers, David also displays his own deft writing skills with notable originals, including "Chelsea Girl."

Rock Star [Audio CD, Soundtrack]

More than merely a headbanger's take on A Star Is Born, Rock Star is, like all great Hollywood middlebrow fare, actually "inspired by a true story": the saga of an Ohio salesman/Judas Priest tribute band vocalist who one day found himself taking Rob Halford's place in the spotlight. But whether its music is big-hair throwback or merely ahead-of-the-curve '80s retro-hip is hardly a matter that will cause quantum theorists sleepless nights. Not surprisingly, the film's soundtrack sounds both distinctly virtual and marketing-department honed: a mix of modern rockers (Everclear's hard-pop title track, the Verve Pipe's "Colorful") and '80s vets (Bon Jovi's genre-defining "Livin' on a Prayer"). Steel Dragon, the film's fictional headliners, feature era vets Jason Bonham on drums, Zakk Wylde on guitar, and vocalist Jeff Scott Soto giving star Mark Wahlberg something to lip-synch. They re-create a frighteningly credible faux-'80s pop-metal ethos that ranges from the big-ballad Bon Jovi-isms of "We All Die Young" to the pounding, metallic Priest-cloning of "Livin' the Life" and "Blood Pollution," and the anthemic "Long Live Rock and Roll," the latter in a ham-fisted performance that begs to be subtitled "(But Please Retire Soon)." It's all enough to make long-suffering heavy metal fans cry out, "Why hast thou forsaken us, Spinal Tap?" --Jerry McCulley

Freight Train/Alan Jackson

Alan Jackson is a US-born multi-platinum country star best known for his string of Country chart hits, including “Don’t Rock the Jukebox” and “Chattahoochee”.

The Georgia-born honky-tonker Alan Jackson has remained true to his traditionalist values throughout his career, even as numerous trends have come and gone through Nashville.

After 20 years of writing and recording hit after hit, country music has become synonymous with Alan Jackson. The superstar has sold over 50 million albums and has claimed nearly 100 industry awards - including three CMA Entertainer of the Year Awards. Freight Train, Jackson's 18th album was produced by longtime collaborator Keith Stegall and features 12 brand new songs, one of which is Jackson's hot new single, "It's Just That Way." Eight of the album's dozen tracks bear Jackson's songwriting credit, including one he penned with Roger Murrah, with whom he wrote one of his biggest hits, "Don't Rock the Jukebox." In a moving tribute to the legendary Vern Gosdin, who passed away last year and for whom Jackson has long expressed admiration, Jackson enlisted Lee Ann Womack to record "Till the End," Gosdin's 1977 classic duet with Janie Fricke.

Emotion & Commotion/Jeff Beck

You might mistake Jeff Beck's on-again, off-again appearances on record as signalling disinterest in the music business. More likely, his periodic blasts of creativity -- punctuated by long (or semi-long) pauses away from recording -- indicate how much Beck is a perfectionist. His early fire-breathing guitar work helped shape hard rock.

For his first studio album in seven years, Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Beck returns with an eclectic mix of tracks that find the guitar virtuoso accompanied by a handpicked cast of talented musicians, as well as several songs accompanied by a 64-piece orchestra. Rhino unleashes the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer s restless genius with EMOTION & COMMOTION.
Beck recorded EMOTION & COMMOTION late last year at Sarm Studios in London with award-winning producers Steve Lipson and Trevor Horn. To create the album s diverse sound, Beck used a number of musicians, including appearances by frequent collaborators Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards), and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass). The album also includes contributions from a trio of singers: Imelda May ('Lilac Wine'), Olivia Safe ('Elegy For Dunkirk'), and Grammy-winner Joss Stone ('I Put A Spell On You' and 'There s No Other Me').
To complement the innovative tones he coaxes from his guitar, Beck recorded with a 64-piece orchestra on songs that range from Puccini s immortal aria 'Nessun Dorma' and Elegy For Dunkirk from the film Atonement to 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' from The Wizard Of Oz and Jeff Buckley s interpretation of 'Corpus Christi Carol.

Beck says the idea of pairing his guitar with an orchestra evolved from the version of Gustav Mahler s Symphony No. 5 he recorded a few years ago. 'It turned out amazingly well, but I didn t want to commit to an entire album of classical music. What appealed to me instead was the idea of bringing together these seemingly contradictory sounds on different kinds of nonclassical music.'
In addition to the orchestral pieces, EMOTION & COMMOTION showcases a number of original compositions. For 'Hammerhead,' Beck fires the rocker s opening salvo through his wah-wah pedal before falling into a deep groove carved out by the rhythm section and horn arrangement. At the opposite end of the sonic spectrum, the airy arrangement that elevates 'Never Alone' provides a wide-angle soundscape for Beck s imagination to freely explore the high-flying melody.

Before launching a world tour to support EMOTION & COMMOTION, Beck will unite with Eric Clapton in February for a series of exclusive shows in London, New York City, Toronto, and Montreal. The guitarists both former members of the Yardbirds will play separately before taking the stage to perform together.
After the shows with Clapton, Beck will play South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, and Japan before returning to America for the U.S. leg of the tour starting mid-April and including an appearance at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on May 1.
For Beck, the new album and tour follows in the wake of a triumphant 2009 his most successful year ever. Among the many highlights were a sold-out world tour; his second induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the release of the platinum-selling Performing This Week... Live At Ronnie Scott s, which earned a Grammy nomination for 'A Day In The Life'; and magnificent performances with his band at the 25th Anniversary Concert of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden.

Have One on Me/Joanna Newsom

25-year old Californian harpist Joanna Newsom is an artist that sharply divides opinion between those who love her music, and those who cannot stand it. As well as providing harp accompaniment for bands and projects of other artists, she has released two full albums (and one EP) under her own name.

After a couple of self-produced and distributed EPs, Newsom signed to Drag City

Joanna Newsom fans: don t look now, but Joanna s about to let her hair down--and that s a considerable task these days. Of course, to the demure Mme. Newsom, this 125 minutes-worth of songs is nothing more than a new album. Through the course of Have One On Mes eighteen songs, Joanna visits upon us ditties, weepies, court dances, rump-bumpers, epics and moments of wraparound fantasia. Have One On Me - ah, have three, they're small!

Another Round/Jaheim

A multi-talented artist, Jaheim is most famous for his R&B vocals, although he has also rapped, modeled, and acted, and appeared in Source and other hip-hop publications. Hip-hop balladeer Jaheim Hoagland hails from New Brunswick, NJ, where he grew up in the 176 Memorial Parkway Homes public housing project. Misfortune hit early: his father died in 1981, when he was only two years old.

With his smooth, sonorous tone, Jaheim is the forerunner and torch-carrier of today's soul-originated R&B. A vocalist in the tradition of such greats as Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross, he signed with former Naughty By Nature beat man Kay Gee's Divine Mill record label in 2000. Jaheim released three albums over five years: his 2001 debut, Ghetto Love; 2002's sophomore set, Still Ghetto - both of which reached RIAA platinum status; and 2006's Ghetto Classics. During that time, he also scored nominations for the BET and Soul Train Music Awards. In 2007, the chart-topping artist returned with his Atlantic Records debut, The Makings of a Man. Monkey Business/Black Eyed Peas

The Black Eyed Peas are a LA-based group, formed by Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap, who achieved worldwide fame when they moved away from their early hip-hop sound towards commercial pop with 2003's Elephunk.

The pair originally got together in 1988 as the Atban Klann, playing the LA club circuit, but took the name Black Eyed Peas in 1995 as their music was ‘food for the soul’. The band had moderate… Read more in Amazon's Black Eyed Peas Store

As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business’s high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake’s contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake’s BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man’s "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don’t Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band’s fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don’t Phunk With My Heart," Fergie’s melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly
accessible ‘hip-pop’ CD. --Denise Sheppard

Only by the Night/Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon return with the release of their highly anticipated fourth album 'Only By The Night' on 22nd September through Columbia Records. 'Only By The Night' is a bold and expansive sonic statement that looks set to solidify Kings of Leon's position as one of the most important international acts of 2008 and beyond. It follows rapidly in the footsteps of the bands previous albums 'Youth And Young Manhood', 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' & 'Because Of The Times', which have quickly established them as one of the most prolific and acclaimed acts around.

Despite a wave of criticism asserting that Kings of Leon's fourth full-length is "too commercial," Only by the Night may be the closest thing to a pitch-perfect album to drop in 2008. Granted, Tennessee's band of brothers (and one first cousin) takes a turn for the heavily polished here, but what the album lacks in rough-edged raunch, it more than makes up for in earnestness and--yes--stunning beauty. From the opening notes of "Closer" to the listing balladry of "Cold Desert," Only by the Night hardly misses a beat. Highlights abound, particularly in the trading off of melodic lines between instruments, and in this regard, bassist Jared Followill is the album's quiet MVP. Above these gorgeous instrumentals, singer Caleb emotes with a dramatic grit that never loses its command. A model of melodic rock composition, arranged and produced with a warm, inviting veneer, and performed with aching sincerity, these 11 tracks coalesce into a sanguine whole that eclipses the band's much-discussed rock posturing and yields more with every play. A good band's great album, Only by the Night (finally) establishes Kings of Leon as a rock act that's worthy of seriously sustained attention. --Jason Kirk

Them Crooked Vultures

THEM CROOKED VULTURES -- a/k/a DAVE GROHL (Foo Fighters, Nirvana), JOSHUA HOMME (Queens of the Stone Age) and JOHN PAUL JONES (Led Zeppelin) -- has confirmed November 17, 2009 as the release date of its eponymous debut album in the United States and Canada on DGC/Interscope Records.
The self-produced 13-song record will feature the debut of the studio versions of the material Them Crooked Vultures unveiled at its August 9 debut at Chicago's Cabaret Metro and played on a first series of shows throughout a handful of UK and European cities and portions of the eastern U.S., wrapping up with an October 15 appearance at New York's Roseland Ballroom.

Additional shows are being announced in the wake of the album's release.

Dark Horse/Nickelback

Few bands did more than Nickelback to establish the force of slick, commercially minded post-grunge in the 2000s. Led by vocalist Chad Kroeger, the band initially emerged in the late '90s as Canada's answer to Creed, prizing a blend of gruff vocals and distorted (yet radio-friendly) guitars.

Nickelback have established themselves as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. With over 26 million albums sold worldwide they have made their mark in rock and roll history. Their new album, 'Dark Horse', is one of the most anticipated releases this year. The band brought in legendary producer Mutt Lange to produce the record with Nickelback and longtime collaborator Joey Moi.

Hymns of the 49th Parallel/K.D.Lang

Kathryn Dawn Lang, better known as k.d. lang, is a multi-award winning country singer-songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Lang has become one of countries biggest cross-over stars through the power of her rich, perfect voice and has collaborated with many big name stars across many genres, most notably; Roy Orbison, Bonnie Raitt, Madeleine Peyroux and Tony Bennett.

Hymns of the 49th Parallel fulfills k.d. lang’s longstanding desire to create a Canadian songbook. On the album, her first for Nonesuch Records, she pays homage to fellow Canadian artists including Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Jane Siberry, Ron Sexsmith, and Bruce Cockburn.

Was it homesickness that compelled longtime Los Angeles resident k.d. lang to fashion her one-woman campaign for north-of-the-border nationalism, or just plain good sense? All Canadian content has long been a mainstay of the Canadian Broadcasting System, but few have selected their material with such a fine hand and a high aesthetic. The expatriate singer has taken great pains to create a sophisticated homage to her Canadian roots, elegantly reinterpreting 11 songs penned by some of her more illustrious countrymen (and women) such as Jane Siberry, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. The idiosyncratic chanteuse turns Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" into an aching monochromatic lament, exploring new tributaries of pain that didn't exist in the original, while recasting Neil Young's "Helpless" into a haunting anthem of memory and comfort, all the while sounding anything but helpless. A gorgeous love letter to her brethren, complete with an intelligent and understated orchestration. --Jaan Uhelszki

Ya-Ka-May

Galactic have made what may be the definitive New Orleans Tribute With YA-KA-MAY, by recognizing this fundamental truth; that all of the town's seemingly disparate styles jazz, brass bands and funk as well as the newer bounce/hip hop are intrinsically linked.

ON YA-KA-MAY:

THIS IS NOT YOUR GRANDFATHER’S NEW ORLEANS RECORD.

This is some post-flood musical reality from a 291-year-old city that’s had a near-death experience.

New Orleans isn’t the same city it was five years ago, and it’s the same city it’s always been. Both these statements are true. One thing’s for sure: these days no one takes New Orleans for granted.

The Beatles Stereo Box Set

The Beatles were the biggest musical phenomenon of the 20th century, being largely responsible for inventing pop music as we know it. No other musical act has been as critically praised or as commercially successful, and only Elvis Presley's emergence in the mid-50s can compete with the Beatles' in terms of width or depth of cultural influence.

Cecilia Bartoli: Sacrificium

"The age of the castratos was one of the most dazzling and remarkable in European music history. Seldom has there ever been such a complete fusion of sensuousness and splendor, form and content, poetry and music, and, above all, such a perfection of vocal virtuosity, as was achieved in the glory days of the Baroque era. The legendary art of the castratos continues to exert its fascination even today, and despite the great human sacrifice it exacted, a new assessment of this extraordinary period is surely justified." - Cecilia Bartoli

Cecilia Bartoli uncovers the extraordinary and cruel world of the `Castrati' and sings the glorious music they inspired. The all-new album consists almost entirely of world-premiere recordings of some of the most virtuosic music ever written for the human voice. The arias on the album are drawn from the works of Nicola Porpora (1686-1768), Antonio Caldara (c. 1670-1736), Francesco Araia (1709-1770), Carl Heinrich Graun (c. 1703-1759), Leonardo Leo (1694-1744), Leonardo Vinci (1696-1730), Riccardo Brosc hi (c. 1658-1756) and Geminiano Giacomello (c. 1692- 1740).

After extensive research Bartoli has produced not only a new recording, but also a comprehensive study of the castrati and their time period through two lavishly produced and illustrated articles included in the deluxe package.

Sacrificium marks the first collaboration of Il Giardino Armonico, Giovanni Antonini, and Bartoli since their Grammy® Award-winning The Vivaldi Album ten years ago. This deluxe package is a hardback book (12 x 14 cm) including 2 CDs of music including 11 world-premiere recordings. The extensive booklet includes two essays on the castrati: "Evviva il coltellino!" ("Long live the the little knife") & "Castrato Compendium" (a 108-page "A-Z" of the castrati). The entire project features lavish illustrations and photos throughout along with an additional 44-page libretto.

Who I Am/Nick Jonas & Administration

2010 solo album from Nick Jonas, one third of the Jonas Brothers and a huge musical phenomenon. With some downtime in 2009, Nick Jonas took the opportunity to form a side project called Nick Jonas & The Administration, which also includes drummer Michael Bland (Prince, Backstreet Boys, Boyz II Men, Rob Thomas), keyboardist Tommy Barbarella (Prince, Switchfoot, Jonny Lang), album-only guitarist David Ryan Harris (John Mayer, Santana) and bassist John Fields (producer of Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Pink) who also produced the CD.

Fueling the album's 10 songs was Nick's long-held fascination with politics, especially politics at the top. Throughout, Nick places allusions to the trappings of the Presidency, from the White House Rose Garden to the symbolic olive branch and arrows clutched in the talons of the American eagle (fans will have fun spotting all the clues). But "Who I Am" is not a political album. Rather, through the idiom of Rock and Soul music, it's a survey of the ungovernable human heart.

Breakthrough/Colbie Caillat

"Breakthrough" is the follow up record to the highly successful debut release, "Coco", by Colbie.

Last time around, Colbie Caillat was feeling "Bubbly," and the entire pop world seemed to want a sip. But this time, effervescence flirts with explosiveness. For her sophomore album, Breakthrough, Colbie has shaken up her sound, bringing in a wider array of producers and players, and significantly picking up the tempo at times from her debut effort's signature ballads. So keep an eye on those carbonation levels: champagne corks may fly.

You'd be hard-pressed to consider an album as accomplished and successful as Coco an accident, yet that's almost what Caillat's 2007 freshman release was. The sudden mania it created at radio and retail "was a surprise for me," Caillat says, "because I hadn't really been in this business yet. I hadn't been doing shows. I wasn't trying to get signed. I just was this girl who wrote songs and put them up on MySpace." By the time Coco was released to stores, "Bubbly" was already enough of an airplay sensation that the album debuted at No. 5. The massive success of a second single, "Realize," helped push the album to over 2 million shipments, in addition to almost 6 million individual digital tracks that were sold. "It all just happened naturally," says Caillat--"and now I have to keep up with it."

Ironbound/Overkill

2010 release from the Metal giants. Long considered the founding fathers of Thrash Metal, Overkill return with their heaviest record to date as they celebrate their 25th Anniversary.

Packing an old school Thrash punch, Ironbound, from start to finish, is ''their masterpiece'' says Metal Hammer and ''the best Overkill disc of the new millennium'' says Brave Words.

WOW what a relief..Overkill is back & they are truly kicking ass & taking names! Now I know there are those that will say Overkill hasn't changed & yes they have stayed true to their formula for years but the last few albums sounded like the band was going through the motions. 'Ironbound' is undoubtedly a return to form & in my opinion their best EVER!! Seriously, this album makes their back catalogue look like nothing..it's that good! Fast & furious from beginning to end!! NO FILLER!! Buy it!!

(500) Days Of Summer-Music From The Motion Picture

Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl Doesn't. The film tells the story of the relationship between a woman, Summer (Zooey Deschanel), who doesn't believe in true love and a man, Tom (Gordon-Levitt), described as a hopeless romantic, who falls in love with her.

Over a span of 500 days, the story moves in a non-linear fashion from the perspective of Tom, who goes from ecstatic giddiness one moment, indulging in a fantasy song and dance sequence at one point, to crippling depression the next.

The soundtrack features two songs ('Us' and 'Hero') by Regina Spektor, and 'Sweet Disposition' by Melbourne-based band The Temper Trap. Artists include Black Lips, classic tracks from The Smiths, Doves, Feist, Meaghan Smith and many more.

XX

The Xx unique make-up is an inadvertent second nature marriage of 2009's urban/guitar tribes, in one corner fluttering new wave indebted reverberation, in the other, plumes of post-dubstep sub-bass and figuratively, their defining core of rich R&B vocal textures.

The enveloping vocal partnership of Romy and Oliver is one that would've dropped-jaws in any decade this century, and set amidst a shivering soundscape of beats and plucks, their bedroom-reared concrete-soul is being justly heralded as the UK's most original and treasured alt. pop artifact of late.

Contra/Vampire Weekend

Like the first album, Contra was produced by keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij and is the realization of a whole and unique musical vision that sees the band stretching out and adding new textures, instrumentation, and rhythms into their sound.

Primarily recorded in New York with a springtime sojourn to Mexico, Contra feels altogether fresh, joyous, and like nothing else but is immediately recognizable as the sound of Vampire Weekend.

After releasing their debut album, Vampire Weekend seemed to face a dilemma. They could either make another album with more of the same or completely change their sound. Either way, they were bound to receive scorn from critics. But somehow, they managed to evolve while still maintaining their signature sound.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix/Phoenix

From the French Electro-Rockers. Born out of restlessness and a steady hunt for inspiration, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is a career-defining album filled with the band's signature melding of synthetics and organics, sharp, danceable rhythms, infectious choruses with a considerable dose of aural panache and candy-colored pop sensibilities.

So here we are with their fourth album, a gleaming culmination of all their previous efforts. WAP has deep, undeniable rock roots yet equally incorporates luscious synth and keyboard, thanks to the skillful Philippe Zdar (of Cassius fame), who produced WAP as well as United. You can particularly hear Zdar's influence on the nearly-danceable tracks "1901" and "Girlfriend," which are also the first two radio releases.

The guitars are piquing, the keyboards lush and full, the drum kits ablaze; this continues for the album's entirety. The lyrics are -- in Phoenix's trademark way -- nonsensical at times, yet interspersed with luminous moments of double entendre. For those looking for thematic cohesion, you won't be disappointed: WAP contains some obvious historical references, including "Lisztomania," "Rome," and "Armistice," not to mention the name of the album itself.

The List/Rosanne Cash

2009 album from Johnny Cash's enormously talented singing/songwriting daughter.

The List features Rosanne's contemporary interpretations of songs from a list of essential Country songs passed on to her by her legendary father. Featuring duet partners Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Rufus Wainwright, and Jeff Tweedy. 12 tracks.

Certain things are in one's blood and soul, however, and being the daughter of Johnny Cash, country music will always be a part of her. In 1973 when she was a teenager, she accompanied Cash on one of his concert tours and the country legend was startled to learn how many legendary country songs his California-raised daughter was unfamiliar with. He sat down and compiled a list of the 100 greatest country songs ever written and encouraged Rosanne to seek them out. A few years ago, Rosanne found the old handwritten list and was inspired to record this album, THE LIST,

Celtic Thunder / It's Entertainment

Overture and beginners please... Strike up the band... Stand by for Celtic Thunder... and It s Entertainment . This stylish and high energy trip through some of the great songs of the last 30 years is pure showbiz! It is a tribute from Celtic Thunder to the legacy they have inherited from the great entertainers of the past, and a mark of how far they themselves have travelled as performers, in a few short years.

It evokes an era of big bands and boulevards, top hats and tails and singing and dancin in the rain! It makes for irresistible listening as the principals from this generation pay their respects to the stars of an earlier time. In the true tradition of variety the music covers a mix of styles, of songs and of singers, as the lads salute their musical heroes- from Fred Astaire to Neil Diamond, from Jim Croce to Chicago, from Michael Buble to The Beach Boys!

Each member features with two songs, one a serious workout, the other a bit of pure fun and a chance to let the hair down! These lighter choices have George stomping around to The Proclaimer s My Life With You , while Ryan takes on the persona of a Chicago gangster with Bad, Bad Leroy Brown . Keith slips right into character with a Surfer Medley and Damian becomes a bit of a boulevardier with Standing On The Corner . Paul steps up to the plate as an accomplished song and dance man with the rooty-tooty Doo Wacka Doo , specially written by Phil Coulter.

One big surprise package is guitarist Neil who not only joins Ryan and Keith in a haunting, close harmony version of Leonard Cohen s Hallelujah but also delivers a superb, soulful solo on the Disney classic When You Wish Upon A Star . The show is rounded off by a couple of ensemble numbers, featuring all six singers, the perennial Amazing Grace and U2 s anthemic Still Haven t Found What I m Looking For . All in all, this is an inspired celebration of wonderful songs and great singers, an uplifting feel-good package that is the perfect antidote to the recession blues!

Play On/Carrie Underwood

From the four-time Grammy Award winner and former American Idol winner. Carrie has come a long way since her AI days including selling more than 10 million albums, garnering ACM and CMA awards and becoming the first Country artist in history to achieve 10 #1 singles from her first two albums. To top that all off, she was also recently inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame! This 2009 album includes the first single 'Cowboy Casanova'.

Not since Shania Twain bared her midriff, and gained legions of fans outside of the country music scene, has there been a disc that blatantly wears its intentions on its (album) sleeve. Literally, the songwriting and producing credits are littered with a who's who of names that are ruling the charts in every genre. And with a longer listening, this album has to be Underwood's most focused. The melodies are smoother, "This Time" with its stuttering drum just below the mix and harmony is just so breezy and effective it leaves you with no choice but to tap your toes and sing-along to the chorus.

Oral Fixation Vol. 2/Shakira

The English-language Oral Fixation Vol. 2 finds Shakira reclaiming some of the bite she showcased on 1998's smashing Donde Estan Los Ladrones? The Colombian rock goddess is making up for lost time: this is her second disc of new material in 2005.

It's quite a feat, considering the four-year gap since Laundry Service, her scattershot, English-language debut album. Oral Fixation Vol. 2 is more mature and better focused than the spin-cycle pop of that 2001 disc. Kick-off track "How Do You Do" starts with a haunting reading of "The Lord's Prayer" before launching into a risky questioning of faith and religion. Shakira touches on the highs and lows of celebrity on a trio of tracks--the bittersweet "Your Embrace," the guitar-driven "Costume Makes the Clown," and the disco-fied, politically charged "Timor."

Selfish men and failed relationships--two oft-mentioned topics of interest--anchor much of Oral Fixation Vol. 2. First single "Don't Bother" is a bitter ode to strength, jealousy, and survival; "Dreams for Plans" is a wistful collage of relationship memories; and Carlos Santana slides a sexy guitar riff under soulful standout track "Illegal."

The purple haze of Prince hangs over "Animal City," one of the disc's most inventive moments. It's a free-wheeling melange of rock riffs, electronic accents, mariachi horns and confident vocals. Two songs from Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 make appearances--the somber "Something" and "The Day and the Time," which improves greatly upon its Spanish counterpart. Vol. 1, while at times enjoyable, was a portrait of a gifted artist struggling to keep her footing and retain her confidence. Oral Fixation Vol. 2 finds Shakira embracing the eclectic beauty within. It's a wonderful sound. --Joey Guerra
